SOMALI INSTITUTE FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE(SIPJ)

Press Release on Somalia

March 22, 2025

Somali Institute for Peace and Justice

I s alarmed and distressed that Somalia is drifting back into another round of brutal and bloody civil war due to the Ethiopian occupation, and the United States ill-advised support for Ethiopias adventure to occupy Somalia.

Draws attention to the grieve consequence of permitting rival Somali factions to purchase/collect more arms and weaponry or power over the other. Somali Institute for Peace and Justice is strongly convinced that Somalia reverted back to tribal warring and vengeances. Even though the weak Transitional Federal Government troops include of individuals from other tribes, the majority are from Puntland State of Somalia which belongs to the Darod tribe where the opposing groups are members of the Hawiye.

Strongly condemns Ethiopias indiscriminate killing and displacement of innocent Somalis. Reportedly, in the last three days, over 50 was killed and estimated 160 was injured where countless people was displaced. Worse of all, the humanitarian relief agencies dont have access to the injured and displace to reduce further suffering of these innocent individuals.

SIPJ equally condemns the barbaric acts exhibited by some individuals in the capital. Its inhuman and goes beyond logics to drag, burn or mutilate corpse. SIPJ asks the Hawiye leaders to restrain such individuals and encourage them to respect the death as the Islamic religion requires.

SIPJ Reaffirm its support for an immediate withdrawal of the Ethiopian troops, replacement of these troops with a neutral international peace keeping forces, and convening a national reconciliation conference on a neutral venue led by unbiased body or group.

Appeals to the international community, United Nations member states and others to intervene and save innocent Somalis from the Ethiopias vengeances and indiscriminant killings. SIPJ further calls on the international community to demand an end to the occupation and to provide humanitarian assistance.

Reiterate the need for United Nations intervention as local neighboring countries and local African intergovernmental organizations, AU & IGAD, are inept or luck the political understanding of the situation. As was the case when the unfortunate civil war started, it would be another tragic oversight for the international community, the United States of America and particularly the United Nation to remain less engaged/interested until Somalia disintegrates into more bloodshed and totally unrecoverable state of further failure.

Somali Institute for Peace and Justice urge the United States of America, our adopted home-country, to heed to the cautious recommendations of the International Crisis Group and other governmental organizations about the consequences of its support of the Ethiopian occupation. The United States of America must work together with the United Nations, the European Union to facilitate a process for peace and reconstruction for the war-torn country of Somalia. SIPJ recommend that it reconsiders its policy towards Somali and Ethiopian venture.
