Jijjiga:Irrigation dev�t project under construction with 207mln birr in Somali State to go operational soon
The construction of West Gode irrigation development project launched with 207 million birr two years ago would go operational soon, Somali State Water, Mines and Energy Bureau disclosed.
Study and Design Supervision Department Head, Berhan Mohammed, told WIC the irrigation dam is being built on Wabeshabelle River.
He said the irrigation development project underway has the capacity to irrigate 4,000 hectares of land and would go operational after four months.
The project would have a significant contribution towards realizing the resettlement program and ensuring food security, according to the head.
The construction of the irrigation project would help pastoralists ensure their food security by cultivating crops, in addition to rearing animals, Berhan noted.
There is a plan to sustainably expand irrigation development in the state as Wabeshabelle River has the capacity to irrigate 27,000 hectares of land, it was indicated.
