Nation to construct various infrastructure facilities to bring about evenly growth of regional states
Senior government officials said infrastructure facilities that would help bring about an even socio-economic growth in all regional states would be constructed in the coming five years with substantial capital.
The officials said various activities in the areas of road construction, provision of telecommunication and power would be implemented taking into consideration the needs of underdeveloped regional states.
The officials made the announcement at a consultative meeting chaired by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to discuss the five-year plan for sustained development and poverty reduction.
They said expansion of infrastructure facilities that would link the underdeveloped regions with others as well as spur investment and foreign trade would be implemented in the stated period.
Plan and Program Manager with the Ethiopian Roads Authority Bekele Negussie said the authority has set to construct 107,000-km roads at federal, regional and woreda levels of which 14,000-km would be upgrading of highways.
He said due attention would be given to asphalting under developed regional states including Somali, Benishangul-Gumuz, Afar and Gambella.
According to the manager, 42 billion Birr is needed to implement the projects.
The stated sum is considerable in light of the 15 billion Birr the country spent over the past eight years for roads construction, he said.
He said the federal budget for road construction is around 30 billion Birr, adding close to 20 billion of the required fund is from the government.
The manager said there are a total of 93 road construction projects in the country and additional 73 road maintenance projects.
Officials of the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation on their part announced plan to reach out ten million people with fixed and mobile phones.
They said the corporation has planned to reach out all pastoralist areas with mobile phone services.
Plan and Business Development Manager with ETC, Zelalem Bekele said the corporation has plans to raise fixed phones to 6.7 million from the existing 3.2 million.
He said there would be 200,000 internet subscribers.
Zelalem said some 30 billion Birr would be injected to expand the telecommunication services and reach out the rural parts of Ethiopia.
General Manager of the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation, Mihret Debebe said power generation activities would be implemented on Tekeze, Belesa, Gilgel Ghibe I and II, Alele and Werabesa rivers.
He said the stated power generation and supply projects would require 43.6 billion Birr.
