Addis Ababa, January 31, 2025 - Federal Affairs Minister Siraj Fegis has announced a 7 billion Birr project aimed at making pastoralist communities in the Afar and Somali State beneficiaries of irrigation development.
The irrigation development activities, according to Siraj, will be carried out on Awash, Wabi Shebelle and Genale Dewa rivers.
The two large scale dams being constructed at the Awash basin is believed to sustain future development of the pastoralists, he said.
Upon completion of this project, he said, more than 80 hectares of land will be developed and about three sugar factories established.
The large scale irrigation construction at western Gode in the Somali State was part of this endeavor, he said, adding preparation of a master plan is nearing completion to make sustainable use of the perennial Wabi Shebele and Genale rivers.
The first phase western Gode-Wabi Shebele dam construction was already completed and a 6,600 hectares of land prepared, he said.
Last year, he said, 700 beneficiaries began developing 1,000 hectares of land after construction of tunnels from the dam.
Tunnels capable of supplying water to develop 3,200 hectares were being constructed, he said.
