GARISSA MAY VOTE WITH ORANGE IN PROTEST By Dujis2007.Com Garissa Correspondent
Garissa may be on course to reject Kibakiss call for Kenyans to accept the New Draft Constitution due to be voted in the upcoming November Referendum. Following recent clashes that forced the banana Team led by Prof. George Saitoti to call off a YES rally, Dujis2007.Com commissioned a survey by randomly interviewing passers-by at two busy designated meeting places.
The results showed 67% of the individuals who participated turned down Wakos Bill and indicated support for the rival Orange camp.
The research further requesting participants to name their main reasons behind their rejection. Amazingly, none of the interviewed persons mentioned the content of the Draft Constitution as a deciding factor but, majority blamed dissatisfaction with their local MPs who they accuse of blindly backing the banana Team to please the President.
some specifically cited Government failure to address their concerns as a major drive behind their rebellious mood and stressed to use the November referendum to protest against the Kibaki administration.
33% sympathised with the YES team and strongly indicated that they will side with the president. Elderly and middle aged women who traditionally are known to be the grassroots supporters of local MP and former long-serving cabinet minister Maalim Mohammed vowed to vote in favour of Maalims stand who is known to be in favour of Wakos bill.
However, majority of those in opposition to the bill are mainly young people between 19 and 45 years who seen to be the more educated and informed groups. Among these groups include many of the Garissa-born civil servants, traders and students.
The survey, exclusively conducted for dujis2007.com website, for the first time revealed the sensitivity of some local residents, who suggested to have opted to vote against the Draft bill in protest of remarks made recently by a Government Minister who called Garissa people Refugees.
Meanwhile, a prominent local businessman was questioned by police for suspected involvement in the violent disruption of the cancelled YES rally in the Area. M.K. Roble recorded a statement at Garissa police station on possible involvement in the fracas. Close family relatives of Maalim Mohammed were also questioned by police for another similar violence.
