The Somali State Animal, Crop and Natural Resources Development Bureau disclosed that over 16 million birr has been allocated to enable pastoralists in the region have access to animal health services and become beneficiaries of improved agricultural technolgies.
Bureau Head Abdulahi Aden told WIC today that out of the money earmarked by the Regional Food Security Bureau to improve the livelihood of over 200,000 pastoralists in the state 9.3 million birr is slated to improving the animal health services.
Accordingly, he said, medications, equipment and vaccines against communicable diseases would be distributed to 52 woredas, while more than 700 community animal health workers and technicians will be recruited from among the pastoralists and receive training.
Besides, seven new health posts would be constructed and existing ones equipped with material and manpower, he said, adding that technical assistance and technologies would be provided for farmers in order to enable the pastoralists engage in extension packages and withstand the recurrent drought in the region.
According to him,1,250 quintals selected seed of maize, wheat, sorghum and haricot beans as well as 700 quintals of urea and dap fertilizers and 15,000 hand tools would be provided for 20,000 pastoralists who would take part in crop production extension packages during the fiscal year.
He finally stated that woredas are recruiting 354 graduates of various Agricultural TVET colleges as development agents so as to provide technical assistances to the pastoralists, whereas 274 other professionals are undertaking practical training.
