Kenya where disaster is not expected !! By Abdirizak Y. Omar
It was just before one month when president Kibaki declared a state of national disaster in a area of the country hit by severe shortages of food and water following a prolonged drought and appealed for donations to alleviate the plight of those affected.
WE know that, in the office of the president there is an entire department charged specifically with disasters, but from the accident on monday (collapsed building) its clear that Kenya is unprepared for any simple disaster when it happens.
It was very shamefull to see puplic removing rubbles with thier bare hands, though thier presence also added to the chaos and intefered with tha late comers rescue oparetors.
Every time live is lost simply because we do not have capacity to respnod to any disaster, in 1998 when bom plast occured in Nairobi the goverment appealed rescue from USA, UK and Israil, we do appreciate thier effort but how long are we going to rely on foreign help ? on the other hand how long can the victims survive under a collapsed building such as the one on Monday and wait rescue coming from hundreds of miles from tel-aviv, london and washington why cant the goverment have well trained experts with thier equipment and deal with this minor case quickly, the accident was not an earth quack or Tsunami.
Whatever the case this another chance for the goverment to show its commitment to ensuring the safety of its people.
