The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise says it has earmarked over 122 million Birr to foster various air transport services including construction of airports in the current budget year.
Public relations head with the enterprise, Tasew Tekle said on Tuesday that the existing terminal here in the metropolis would be maintained and upgraded in order to provide services to domestic passengers.
He said the enterprise which branched off from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation two years ago would construct its own building in the period reported.
Tasew said the enterprise would install electric system in order to interconnect the exiting terminal with the new ones.
Residential houses for security personnel at the Addis Ababa Airport are due to be constructed in the budget year, he said.
Tasew said the enterprise has obtained over 155 million Birr from various services it rendered during the previous budget year, adding that it has also planned to secure similar amount of revenue in the current budget year.
He said the construction of airports that began in Humera and Jijiga would be continued in the current budget year while the construction of terminals in Gambella and Gode would be launched in the budget year.
According to the head, the airport in Asosa in the Benishangul Gumuz State would be upgraded with over 6.2 million Birr in a way that would enable it land Boeing 737 aircrafts.
Moreover, design work for the upgrading of the Jimma Airport would be carried out in the budget year, he said, adding that the road leading to the airport would also be maintained.
He said airports in Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Dire Dawa and Jimma are coordinating neighboring airports.
Engineering study is underway in order to construct airports in Tepi, Jinka, Shire and Negele Borena, Tasew said, adding that the construction of terminal and runway of the Dire Dawa Airport had been completed in 1997 E.C., he said.
Various activities would be carried out in the budget year to maintain the quality of airports across the country, the head said.
He said additional airports would also be constructed in various parts of the country considering their economic significance, he added.
