Irrigation development that benefits over 120,000 pastoralists underway in Somali state
The Somali state is reportedly carrying out the construction and designing of 25 irrigation development projects that could serve over 120,000 pastoralists in 18 drought-prone woredas.
Irrigation Development Authority Manager, Abdurhaman Anmed, said the Food Security Bureau has been undertaking the harnessing of five rivers, the construction of six small dams and irrigation as well as rehabilitation of projects, design studies and expansion works with 67 million birr budget this year.
He said the construction, maintenance and expansion works that are expected to be completed next year would enable each project to develop 120 to 250 hectares benefiting more than 120,000 pastoralists and agro-pastoralists.
The manager said design studies to harness and construct dams on rivers and streams in Shinile, East Emi, Degehabour and Gursum woredas that could develop up to 200 hectares of land have also been launched.
Studies are also underway on projects which can help the development of fodder and pasture, in addition to cultivating backyard vegetables and crops, so as to address the problem of recurrent droughts in the state and ensure food security,it was noted.
