Deputy PM urges enhancement of research works to ensure productivity of pastoarlist
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said research findings on rice and other crops conducted in West Gode Zone of Somali State should be enhanced to ensure the benefit of the pastoralist communities.
While opening a two-day seminar in Jijiga town on the research findings conducted using the Wabe Shebele River, Addisu Leggesse said the research being undertaken in the State should be further strengthened to change the lives of pastoralists.
Addisu said every stakeholder should discharge its responsibility since the research has its share in the realization of the governments program to improve the lives of the pastoralist community.
Seminar Coordinators said deliberations that focus on ensuring the benefit of the pastoralist from the research findings on rice, maize, sorghum and other crops would be held.
It was disclosed that rice varieties that yield up to 70 quintals per hectare have been found by a three-year research conducted on 39 rice varieties that grow in east Africa.
Sasakawa-Global 2000 Africa-wide Rice Research Program Coordinator Tareke Berhe said his organization has been providing assistance for the research activity conducted in Gode and Kelafo areas in Somali State.
