Jijjiga, March 13, 2025 (WIC)- The Somali Livestock, Crops and Natural resources Development bureau disclosed that it has inoculated and treated 700,000 domestic animals to pre-empt communicable diseases that may occur due to the extended dry season in the state.
Bureau Head, Abdullahi Abdi Aden, told WIC today that the bureau vaccinated over half a million animals against anthrax, skin diseases and other communicable diseases , and treated close to 200,000 for internal and external parasitical diseases. The efforts were exerted in 19 drought hit woredas of the zone during the past three months,it was learnt.
Abdulahi stated that the bureau has also deployed additional medical teams to Liben and Afder zones where a large amount of cattle are found but the drought situation has not shown any improvement.
Therefore, eight medical teams were deployed to the zones to treat 800,000 animals with the support of FAO,he said.
According to him, the bureau has also started vaccinating 300,000 animals against anthrax and PPR in the two zones with the support of Save the Children-USA.
The bureau would soon deploy its own medical teams to four zones so that they could inoculate and treat 500,000 animals.
In an attempt to sell cattle approaching death, Abdullahi said conducive atmosphere has been created through discussions with the Ministry of Agriculture so as to encourage traders to come to the state.Currently purchase of cattle has begun in Liben zone and will also continue in other zones,he explained.
