Jijjiga, March 23 (WIC)- Cross sections of the society in Gode zone of the Somali state have resolved to support the poverty reduction effort underway in their localities by maintaining peace and stability.
In a resolution they adopted recently after holding public conference on peace and development in Gode town, over 500 prominent public figures, clan leaders, youth and women representatives said they have reached a consensus to root out anti- peace elements living among themselves as they have been impediments to development.
The participants said despite the government's commendable achievements in improving lives of pastoralists through education , health , water supply and irrigation, the anti-peace forces organized under the Ogaden National Liberation Front are posing severe impediments to development by killing innocent civilians, planting grenades and burning houses.
At a time when our age old problems are being addressed in a democratic manner the freedom of Ogaden could be guaranteed only in speedy development, but not in terror, the participants said, agreeing to uproot forces that hamper their progress and called upon the government to stand by their side.
Chief Administrator of the zone, Nedir Aden Hassen, said on his part that the objective of the Ogaden National Liberation Front is to create havoc and instability thus disrupting the legal cattle market and reintroduce contraband, which is the main source of income of the Front that loots the cattle and smuggle them to neighbouring states.
Nedir further said the anti-peace forces are aiming only at impeding the expansion of roads, electricity, and telephone as well as other social services. He noted that they are particularly focusing on Gode, Danan and East Eme woredas where priority has been given to improve the livelihood of the pastoralists in a short period of time.
The Chief Administrator said the government would give the necessary support to help implement the decision of the public to fight back the anti-peace forces.
