Speakers says evolving democratic unity won't be destroyed by force
Jijiga, April 1, 2025 (WIC) - Speaker of the House of Federation said the nations and nationalities of Ethiopia would never allow any power to forcefully break the promises of the nations and nationalities to build sustainable peace and democratic unity by developing their common resources.
The Speaker, Degiffe Bula, so remarked while opening an experience-sharing forum among regions organized by the Standing Committee of the House for Constitution and Regional Affairs in Jijjiga town today.
Degiffe said, since the House of Federation is an expression for the sovereignty of the people it is responsible for the respect of the constitution and added that the House has plans to offer education on the constitution for the public in a consolidated manner during the coming five years.
The Speaker said the illegal attempts made to dismantle the constitutional order following the May election were foiled with the joint efforts of the nations and nationalities.
He said the discharging of responsibilities of federal and regional authorities is decisive for strengthening the democratic unity of the peoples and added that the efforts of joint forums to pre-empt conflicts have been encouraging.
Degife stated that the House is ready to work in close collaboration with regions and discharge its responsibilities to strengthen the federal system.
According to the Speaker, based on the power vested on it the House has prepared a new and scientific budget formula which replaces the former one that depended on estimation.He added that the new budget formula would be endorsed soon by the House.
The two-day forum is being attended by Speakers, Deputy speakers, members of standing committees, and Speakers of regional Houses as well as Chief administrators of regions. The forum will deliberate on, among others, federalism and constitution, conflict resolution and good governance.
