Addis Ababa, May 13, 2025 - Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin held talks with Mohamoud Musa Hersi, President of Puntland state of Somalia Transitional Federal Government.
The two sides confered on ways of cooperating in economic, cultural, security and social affairs at border areas.
After the talks, Hersi told journalists that his delegation held in-depth discussions with Ethiopian government officials on cooperation in the areas of education, health, infrastructure development and trade.
He said the discussions were fruitful and concluded in a spirit of mutual understanding.
Somalian Ambassador to Ethiopia Abdikarin Farah on his part said Ethiopia has been providing enhanced support under the framework on IGAD towards durable peace in Somalia.
Foreign Minister Seyoum on his part said Ethiopia is ready to cooperate in activities aimed at solving security problems along the border with Puntland.
Ethiopia is willing to enhance cross border trade exchanges and people-to-people relations along the border areas, Ethiopian Ambassador to Somalia Abdulaziz Ahmed quoted Seyoum as saying during the discussions.
Meanwhile the delegation also held talks with Ethiopian government officials here yesterday.
During the talks, the two sides have reached a common consensus to cooperate in the fields of the economy, trade, education as well as security.
Accordingly, discussions between the Punt land delegation and the Ethiopian Minister of Trade and Industry at the Addis Ababa Hilton was concluded in a common resolve to formulate agreement frameworks that enable the enhancement and expansion of trans-boundary trade exchanges.
The delegation also held talks with Ethiopian Minister of Education Dr. Sentayehu Wolde-Michael on cooperation and support in the sector.
Ambassador to Ethiopia of the Somalia Transitional Federal Government, Abdikarim Farah said the arms embargo imposed against his country impeded efforts to form and strengthen the security force.
He said cooperation with and support from neighbouring countries like Ethiopia in the areas of peace and security would be vital in the efforts to strengthen the capacity of the federal government of Somalia.
The Ambassador said Punt land enjoys relative peace and stability and have a significant role to play in the general peace and stability in Somalia.
He indicated the need to step up cooperation between Ethiopia and Somalia, and expressed hope that Ethiopia would further its support to Somalia in the areas particularly of trade, education and peace and security.
Chief of the Somali State Government Abdulahi Hassan on his part said Ethiopia played significant role in the peace and reconstruction efforts in neighbouring Somalia.
The cooperation and support between the two countries would enable to maintain peace in Somalia in particular and in the region in general as well as to fight what he said was their common enemy -poverty.
The delegation led by Mohamoud Musa Hersi arrived here Thursday.
