UNICEF donates 2.2mln birr to help boost primary education in Somali State
Jijjiga, May 22, 2025 (WIC) - The United Nations Children�s Fund (UNICEF) has donated 2.2 million birr which would help raise primary education coverage and enrollment of female students in Somali state, the regional Education Bureau disclosed.
UNICEF Programme Coordinator with the Bureau, Mohammed Abdi told WIC today that the donation was made to more than 200 schools in Gode, Jijjiga, Kebribeyah, Shinile and Babille woredas.
The coordinator said the donation was utilized for the purchase of educational materials, office furniture,capacity building and to assist 100 female destitutestudents to pursue their education.
The special assistance provided for the female students by recruiting tutors has helped reduce the number of dropouts and failing students attracting new female students to schools, Mohammed added.
Mohammed said primary school enrollment has as a result doubled exceeding 30 percent in the beneficiary woredas.
UNICEF has made the donation for the fifth time, according to the coordinator.
