CUD calls on individuals to refrain from irresponsible activities


Addis Ababa, May 26, 2025 - The Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) says it advances its goals on the basis of the constitution and only through peaceful means. The party says it recognizes that any movement contrary to this would pose danger on the nation�s existence and the wellbeing of its people.

The party said CUD does not accept any call that is contrary to the legal and peaceful method of struggle, and called on individuals operating in foreign countries in the name of CUD to refrain from irresponsible activities.


According to a statement CUD sent to ENA yesterday, it called on the public to strengthen peaceful struggle based on the laws of the country so as to build a democratic system.


The statement indicated that the party has learnt about the formation of a new front called �Alliance for Freedom and Democracy.�


The statement added that though the formation of an opposition front in foreign countries is not a new phenomenon, the party has been surprised to hear that CUD is a member of the newly formed front.


It said the CUD party as a legal registered party operating in the country, it has no interest to create a front with elements that want to engage in an armed struggle.


It said CUD would strive to realize its objectives only through peaceful means based on the constitution and other laws of the country.


No one can speak about the destructive outcome of armed struggle more than Ethiopians, the statement said, adding, the feeling of enmity and killing each other should stop.


The way to enhance democratic political culture is strengthening peaceful and legal struggle, the statement said.


Although the problems that followed the May 2005 elections are frustrating, the statement said, stepping aside from the peaceful struggle would, however, only be a victory for the ruling party and a big loss for CUD.


The statement also condemned the recent explosions that caused the loss of lives and property damage in Addis Ababa city.


CUD believes problems can be solved through dialogue and understanding and not by forceful alternative, the statement said.
