Research institute multiplying 46 high-yielding crops in Somali state
Jijjiga, June 9, 2025 (WIC)-The Somali state Pastoralist and Semi-Pastoralist Agricultural Research Institute said it has commenced multiplying 46 high-yielding crops and animal fodder varieties to be distributed to pastoralists in rain-deficit areas of the state.
Head of the Institute,Dr. Ahmed Sheik Mohammed, said the high-yielding varieties which are multiplied in Jijjiga, Gode and Kelafo research centers include 16 species of maize, rice and sorghum and 15 varieties of grass and trees as well as six species of sesame.
The new varieties that are selected from various agricultural research centers of the country are suitable to the localities, he added.
Dr Ahmed said the new varieties, which resist dry weather and ripen in a short period, would play an important role in ensuring food security in the region and improves the livelihood of the pastoralist community.
The Head stated that the Institute has been introducing the new varieties to the pastoralists by providing them with training and demonstrating on their farmlands.
The institute has exerted utmost efforts to conduct additional research that will enable pastoralists and semi-pastoralists to increase productivity and ensure food security in the region, according to Dr.Ahmed.
