Projects that improve livelihood of pastoralists underway with 229 million birr in Somali state
Jijjiga, June 13, 2025 (WIC)-The Somali state Food Security Bureau is reportedly executing various projects which would improve the livelihood of pastoralists with an outlay of 229 million birr.
Bureau Head, Annisa Yusuf, told WIC that the sectors included in the food security program are water, mining and energy, irrigation, animal, crops and natural resources development as well as pastoralist and semi-pastoralist agricultural research institutions.
Drilling of 35 deep water wells has been finalized while the digging of 11 of the newly planned 46 water wells has started. Water pipes for the projects of Filtu and Argele towns have been procured with an out lay of 72 million birr, according to Annisa.
The irrigation development program underway in West Gode area with an outlay of 30 million birr is also part of the program,she added.
According to her, maintenance of old water canals to make them suitable for irrigation is underway in Kelafo area. The Head added that a study which benefits 18 woredas along the four main rivers of the state has been finalized and the purchasing of motors currently underway.
In the agriculture sector, agreement has been reached with Haramaya University to train 200 animal husbandry and health professionals.
Veterinary medicines and selected seeds have also been purchased. Training has also been given to veterinary health professionals and four ponds are being prepared in Kebribeyah and Harshin woredas,she elaborated.
She further disclosed that budget for execution of programs and capacity building has been allocated to the regional pastoralist and semi-pastoralist agriculture research institute that provides suitable technologies for crop and animal production.
