JigJiga: Programs centering rural dev't, good governance underway in Jijjiga woreda
The Capacity Building Office of the Somali state disclosed that programs, which would enable rural areas to become center for development and good governance, have been under execution in Jijjiga woreda with an outlay of five million birr.
Office Head Muktar Ali told WIC that the integrated programs aimed at strengthening a decentralized system of administration have been implemented since last January with the support of United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and would be instrumental in improving the livelihood of the rural community and create conducive atmosphere of working.
Some 90 solar energy receiving equipment were installed in three pilot kebeles and are serving more than 300 households by providing round-the- clock electric power supply,he added.
According to the Head, the inhabitants are utilizing the solar energy to milk cows and cook, among others.Five pastoralists were earlier trained in India so that they could operate and maintain the equipment by themselves.
Muktar said the construction of projects in potable water schemes, latrines and health services provisions have been underway to make the rural areas habitable. A tractor and three flour mills were provided to the pastoralists to encourage them to engage in farming alongside animal rearing.
He said the efforts to rapidly realize decentralized administration in the woreda and provide the necessary services for the public would further be consolidated, according to Muktar.
