Ethiopia is worried as fundamentalists in Moqadishu have declared Jihad on Ethiopia and the Eritrean government has involved in the turmoil in Somalia.
Public Relations Advisor to the Prime Minister with the Rank of Minister, Bereket Simon, in an interview with the English service of the Voice of America Monday, said that the fundamentalists in Somalia have declared Jihad on Ethiopia.
Bereket said as the fundamentalists had been using Somalia as a spring board for several types of terrorist activities and all sorts of bombings as well as the Eritrean governments involvement in Somalian turmoil worries Ethiopia.
We would differentiate between the Islamic Courts who have every right to exercise their Sharia religious obligations. But also there are Al- Qaeda and Al-Itihaad elements who are at the level of leadership at this point, Bereket said.
Meanwhile, Ethiopian Ambassador to Somalia said, as they are neighbours, anti peace movements in the region greatly concern Ethiopia and Somalia.
In a press conference he gave yesterday in connection with the current situations in Somalia, Ambassador Abdulaziz Ahmed said the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), established in Somalia plays a pivotal role for the prevalence of peace in the region.
Attempts of fundamentalists to enter Somalia to destabilize the Somali people would not be acceptable at any rate, Ambassador Abdulaziz said.
As the Transitional Government established in Somalia is legitimate and has been recognized by the international community, it is getting the necessary assistance from the United Nations as well as member countries of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Besides being neighbours, Ethiopia and Somalia have strong blood ties, Ambassador Abdulaziz said, and added that it would not be surprising if Ethiopia plays active role in Somalias politics.
Assistances being provided to the transitional government are in accordance with the agreement reached between member countries of the African Union and the IGAD, the Ambassador said.
The Ambassador also said, as it is a threat for the peace and stability of the region, Ethiopia closely follows any movement made against the legitimate Somalian transitional government.
Somalis would be the prime beneficiaries of the peace and stability in Somalia, Ambassador Abdulaziz said, and added that everybody should understand that Ethiopia promotes no hidden agenda than ensuring peace and stability in Somalia.
Ambassador Abdulaziz warned those forces trying to affect Ethiopias peace, by creating instability in some parts of Somalia, to refrain from their ill motives.
Meanwhile, the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) expressed concern at the continued fragility of the peace and reconciliation process in Somalia.
The Council heared a briefing on the situation in Somalia from the Special Representative of the Commission for Somalia, Ambassador Mohammed Ali Foum as well as Somalias Permanent Representative to the AU Monday.
After hearing the briefing, the Council reiterated its earlier decisions expressing AUs full support to the Transitional Federal Institutions (TFIs), particularly the Transitional Federal Government (TFG).
The Council also called on all concerned Somali parties to seek the path of dialogue and to extend the necessary cooperation to the TFG in order to achieve lasting peace and reconciliation in Somalia.
It also took notes of the steps taken by the Commission in cooperation with IGAD and AU partners as a follow-up to its earlier decisions on Somalia, including the consultative meeting between the AU, the IGAD and international partners on the Somalia held in Addis Ababa on 19 June, 2006.
The Council further took note of the meeting of the Somali International Court Group, held in Brussels on 17 June 2025 and stressed the need to expedite ongoing IGAD/AU preparations to create conditions propitious for the deployment of IGASOM as soon as possible.
