The first phase construction work of Jijjiga University is reportedly well underway. GTZ International Service Jijjiga Project manager, Armin Simon, told WIC that the first phase construction consists of 19 buildings for dormitory, library, classrooms and offices.
GTZ is responsible for executing, monitoring and supervising the project owned by the Ministry of Education, the manager said, adding that it is also providing building technology transfer, including capacity building training for professionals and technical support.
The first phase construction would require 33 million birr, excluding the consulting fee, according to Simon.Upon the completion of this phase the University would enroll 2,250 students.
However, it may not be possible to begin classes at the beginning of the upcoming academic year as the construction work is not progressing at the required pace ,the project manager disclosed.
Sub-contracting company manager, Mesfin Tadesse, said on his part that utmost efforts would be exerted to enable the university enroll 800 students at the beginning of the academic year.
On going fully operational, the university would have the capacity to enroll 9,000 students, it was learnt.
