Jijjiga: Somali state police says ethnic conflicts, disputes with neighboring states on decline
The Somali Police Commission said sporadic ethnic conflicts in the state have been declining while disputes with neighboring Afar and Oromia states are being resolved.
Somali state Police Commissioner, Beshir Abdulahi, told WIC today that ethnic conflicts, which used to flare up in Warder, Afder, Shinile and Qorahe zones due to grazing lands, water, land, cattle and other minor causes, are of late being solved through negotiations.
Following the full mandate given to woreda administrations in particular, the woredas are solving the problems on their own and added that this has helped decrease the number of casualties due to conflicts as the confrontations used to claim human lives before the regional police and relevant bodies arrived at the places.
He said disputes in areas neighboring Afar state are being solved with the collaboration of administrations of the two states, elders and security personnel.
The commissioner also said ethnic conflicts stirred by minor problems in woredas neighboring Oromia and Somali states are being resolved amicably.
Though there are road and other infrastructure problems in some areas, police officers who have acquired adequate training in conflict resolution are making preparations to implement them with the joint efforts of the two states.
According to the commissioner, even if some anti-peace forces have been attempting to gain political benefit by creating conflicts in bordering woredas they have utterly failed.
He further noted that conflicts in bordering woredas and towns should be solved through community participation and the media should broadcast programs on conflict resolution in different languages since pastoralists are good radio listeners.
