17 Million birr food security projects to be executed in Somali state
The Somali state Crop and Natural Resources Development Bureau said it has finalized preparations to execute 17 million birr food security projects this fiscal year.
Bureau Head, Abdulahi Abdi Aden, told WIC that the projects include expansion of animal health services and crop development extension works.
Accordingly,procurement of medicine and vaccines would be undertaken to inoculate and treat more than 7.5 million animals,he added.
Professionals would also be trained in collaboration with the Haromaya University so as to make the 150 vet health posts in 52 woredas of the state commence work, the Head said, adding that short-term training would also be offered to pastoralists on animal development and health.
Abdulahi further said that information would be gathered on the state of health of animals in the region and a strategy for disease surveillance and control would be designed so as to boost the economy of pastoralists. Animal market centers would also be built in all woredas of the state, he added.
He stated that modern animal fodder development and multiplication works would be carried out in 24 river basins and areas with sufficient rainfall.Training will also be given to 250 farmers on utilization of fodder,it was pointed out.
Preparation has also been finalized to cover 13,000 hectares of land with various crops benefiting 27,000 farmers, Abdulahi stated.
Besides,demonstration centers would be prepared in eight woredas.
Abdulahi said training would be given on land management in two woredas, soil and water conservation as well as natural gum development so as to protect the depleting natural resources of the state.
